The Scottish religious tradition of the Covenanters has never received a ready audience in Glengarry County and is represented only at the margins by the Reformed Presbyterian congregation on the Brodie Road. Nonetheless their traditions are richly representative of the early Scots emigrations to the Carolinas and the American South and account for considerable differences of custom and style between Canada and America. Our presentation deals with the English Civil War, the Presbyterian martyrology of the Killing Times, Montrose, Bonnie Dundee (Bloody Clavers), the Cameronians and all the lore of song and poetry that informs our views on this dark matter, not to mention the new-found ritual of The Kirkin' of the Tartan.
